The God of Rain

In desperation Undaa’s family turned to the local Mongolian shamans to conjure rain for their parched pastures, and we knew immediately we had to call on Jesus to do this miracle on their behalf.

Undaa was a student at the university in Inner Mongolia where we work. One weekend she invited us to visit her family in the Xilingol countryside. Like many in this part of the country, Undaa’s family lives a very simple life raising livestock in the open grassland. They depend on nature to survive, and this summer the rains had not fallen on the family’s land. Other areas of the Xilingol grassland were green, but the area where they live was dry and brown. No rain meant little for the animals to eat, threatening the family’s very survival.

Typically, the shaman will work their magic only upon receiving a high fee for their services. Undaa’s family was poor, and when we learned what was happening, we told them we know the God that makes the rain. We told them about the Creator of the sky, the earth, and everything on it. We told them God loves them and that we would pray for rain to come, not for money but just because we love and care about her family. Then we prayed for them on the spot.

Although the rains did not come at that moment, God’s presence and our compassion touched this family. We continued to pray, and we visit them every opportunity we get. We believe that the rains will come, both on their grasslands and spiritually in their hearts as the Holy Spirit draws them to Himself.
