Somchai in Thailand
Often, a Thai Buddhist comes to Christ only after having multiple encounters with Christians and hearing the Gospel many times over a period of months or even years. Sometimes they decide not to follow Jesus, increasing the challenge of those trying to lead them to Christ.
As a sophomore at university in Thailand, Somchai and his good friend came to study at a local church’s English center. He took classes four nights a week and attended the Friday night parties and other events where he heard about God. Somchai became good friends with the English teachers and several members of the church. He even joined the church badminton group on Sunday evenings.
After about three years, Somchai’s friend decided to become a Christian. Somchai wasn’t interested. He’s a Buddhist, and tries to keep the Five Precepts and follow the Buddha’s teachings. As a physics major, Somchai believes that the teachings and philosophical aspect of Buddhism go along with science.
Somchai graduated two years ago and found a job in town. Every once in awhile he goes to church or spends time with his Christian friends, but he is still uninterested in knowing Jesus for himself. Even though he has heard about Jesus for five years, and has made strong friendships with Christians, he keeps the Buddhist teachings and shows no curiosity in Christianity.
