TRANSPORTATION
The easiest way to travel in Tokyo is via the trains and buses. They are extremely reliable, efficient, easy to navigate via Apple Maps or Google Maps, and cheap. Therefore, it is recommended that for your time here, you utilize a SUICA or Pasmo train card.
Money is loaded onto the card and then you tap your card at the train gate. Tickets for individual train rides can be purchased at ticket machines but it is very inconvenient. When you arrive in Japan, a SUICA or Pasmo train card can be purchased at the airport at a ticket machine. Our recommendation is that you get a mobile SUICA card installed on your phone before you arrive. This is a train card on your phone that is connected to your credit card. So loading more money onto it is super easy (no ticket machine needed and you can always see your balance). This allows you to tap your phone at the train gate and not have to worry about a physical card.
*Note that mobile train cards are currently only available for iPhone users.
If you do not want to travel using the trains, taxis are plentiful and can take payment by cash or SUICA card (physical or mobile). You can also choose to use the Uber app to order a taxi.
Most places in Japan readily accept credit or debit cards. There will be some smaller restaurants and shops that are cash only. Money can be exchanged into yen upon arrival at the airport. You can also draw yen cash out of any ATM (at the airport and at most convenient store locations).
MONEY
Tokyo is considered the safest city in the world. You can move about the city fairly worry-free. Aside from a few key areas that you would not want to find yourself in at night, Tokyo is a safe place to explore.
